On Christmas Eve, on a small, snow-covered Aegean island in the late 19th century, Achtitsa, a poor elderly woman, struggles to raise her two orphaned grandchildren with the help of her kind neighbor, Zerbinios. While being in great despair, a money check sent by her long-lost son in America brings a ray of hope. When the village grocer attempts to take advantage of her ignorance about the check’s true value, a merchant from Syros intervenes by accident and secures a better future for Achtitsa.
